When the rot sets in
2023
(local clay, coffee sacks, natural linen thread, mycelium, coffee)
During May 2023 with a solo exhibition of the same name at the Landbouwbelang in Maastricht, NL, this experimental sculpture comprising of a cast of the artists hand in clay sourced from her farm in the UK was fired to a porous 500 degrees and stitched with coffee sack material. It was later was innoculated with mycelium spawn and left to rot within the space for 16 days. Throughout the experimental process the mycelium was absorbed by the clay, showing signs of growth within the material. The meaning of decay as an art process was considered, to distort the understanding between art piece and living organism.
